Lakeland was picked to finish third in the final season of the Illini-Badger Football Conference in a preseason poll of the league's coaches.
Defending champion Concordia University, Wis., was picked to win the league, Greenville was second and Lakeland third.
"With the late coaching change, that's a tribute to the respect the league coaches have for our players and our program," said Lakeland first-year head coach Kevin Doherty. "I really wasn't sure where we were going to be in people's minds with the late change."
Aurora was fourth, followed by Benedictine, Concordia-Chicago, Eureka and MacMurray.
Beginning in the fall of 2008, Lakeland, CUW, Aurora, Benedictine and Concordia-Chicago will be playing football in the Northern Athletics Conference, joining Maranatha Baptist, Rockford and Wisconsin Lutheran.
Three Muskies were named to the coaches' Preseason Top 10 Players to Watch list: senior wide receiver MacArthur White (Zion, Ill.), senior quarterback Brad Wilk (Roselle, Ill,) and junior linebacker John Wagner (Kewaunee, Wis.) All three were first team all-IBFC honorees a year ago.
"It's flattering to know that of the top 10 players in the league to watch, three are from our program," Doherty said. "Coaches in our league are obviously recognize what they've accomplished, now it's up to them to live up to those reputations."

Lakeland opens the season at home on Saturday, Sept. 1, at 1 p.m. by hosting Division III national runner-up UW-Whitewater at Taylor Field.
