Muskies Split Matches in Second Day of UWL Tourney

The Lakeland women's volleyball team started out the second day of the UW-La Crosse Tournament strong, taking a hard-found match against Illinois Wesleyan, 3-2 (30-26, 30-26, 29-31, 27-30, 15-9), before dropping their second match of the day to a tough Carthage College squad, 3-0 (30-18, 30-25, 30-22).

The Muskies (4-6 overall) were aided in their victory over Illinois Wesleyan by strong efforts on offense, as the team hit a solid .432 in game one. Sophomore outside hitter Brittanie Paulus continued to have a strong weekend, recording a team-high 14 kills and tying sophomore defensive specialist Tonia Strebelinski for team digs leader with 17 apiece.

Senior outside hitter Ashley Domask and junior right side Heidi Kramer also boosted the offensive line with 13 kills each. Freshman setter Kristine Raeder continued to prove herself worthy of court time, as she racked up 30 assists and 16 digs. Senior Shelly Bruni and sophomore Kim Linger headed up the blocking efforts in the middle with four block assists apiece.

However, the Muskies were unable to convert their success against Illinois Wesleyan into an upset of Carthage, ranked No. 6 in the nation, as their team hitting dipped to .138 for the match.

Linger led the team with seven kills and three block assists, while sophomore utility Kaylyn Kasper had six kills and a team-high 11 digs. Kramer also chipped in six kills, and Raeder tallied 17 assists and 10 digs.

The squad will continue match play with Northern Athletics Conference opponent Maranatha Baptist on Tuesday, Sept. 18. Match time is set for 7 p.m. in Lakeland's Moose and Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
