Muskies Split First Day of UW-O Invite

The Lakeland College women's volleyball team split a pair of non-conference matches in the first day of the UW-Oshkosh Invitational, dropping a 3-0 decision to the host Titans followed by a 3-0 victory over Milwaukee School of Engineering on Friday, Oct. 12, in Oshkosh, Wis.

The Muskies (15-9 overall) stuck close with Oshkosh, ranked No. 5 in the nation, throughout the match and pushed game one into extra points, 34-32. Although the squad was unable to sustain that same effort throughout the following two games, they still resulted in close scores, 30-25 and 30-25.

Senior outside hitter Ashley Domask led the offensive drive against the Titans with 11 kills, followed by senior middle hitter Shelly Bruni and sophomore outside hitter Brittanie Paulus with seven kills apiece. Paulus and Domask were also key in the backcourt with 17 and 14 digs, respectively.

Despite a disappointing result against Oshkosh, the Muskies bounced back to tally a decisive win over MSOE, 30-23, 30-21, 30-19.

Paulus was once again a key threat with a team-high 17 kills, followed by sophomore middle hitter Kim Linger with 11 kills. Sophomore defensive specialist Tonia Strebelinski headed up the defense with 16 digs, followed by freshman setter Kristine Raeder with 11 digs. Raeder also racked up a squad-leading 27 assists against the Raiders.

The Muskies will continue match play at Oshkosh on Saturday, Oct. 13, starting with UW-Stevens Point at 10 a.m.
