Hughes Awarded IBFC Special Teams Player of the Week

Lakeland College junior punter/kicker Billy Hughes (Brooksville, Fla./Nature Coast Tech) was awarded the Illini-Badger Football Conference Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance against UW-Oshkosh last Saturday.

This is the third straight week a Muskie has captured the IBFC Special Teams Player of the Week honors. The past two weeks, Lakeland senior wide receiver MacArthur White has captured the honor.

Hughes was solid in the Muskies' 62-7 loss to the Titans last Saturday. He had eight punts for an average of 38.5 yards, with a long of 47 yards. Hughes leads the Muskies in punting this season, averaging 36.5 yards per punt this season.

"A 38.5 yard punt average is great," said Lakeland head coach Kevin Doherty. "He's very comfortable punting and did a great job protecting the ball. Punters get pressured quite a bit. He's pretty laid back, which I think helps him to handle the pressure of punting well."

This isn't the first collegiate football honor for Hughes. He was named an all-IBFC honorable mention for punting last season.
