A pair of Lakeland football players picked up weekly honors for outstanding play in the Muskies' 56-7 win over Concordia University Chicago on Saturday. Sophomore Jacob Heinemeyer (Shiocton/Shiocton) was named Illini-Badger Football Conference Special Teams Player of the Week and to the D3football.com Team of the Week as a returner, and senior Josh Schramm (Cuba City/Cuba City) was also named to D3football.com Team of the Week as a defensive back.
Heinemeyer sparkled as he returned two punts for touchdowns in the Muskies' win. His scores were on returns of 65 and 28 yards. The sophomore is seventh in the nation in NCAA Division III in punt returns with an average of 16.2 yards per return. As a freshman, Heinemeyer was an all-IBFC second team returner and served as the Muskies back-up quarterback.
"Jake is a great athlete and he has dual roles as a wide receiver and returner," said Lakeland head coach Kevin Doherty. "Saturday everything was clicking for our return team. The team did a great job of blocking and Jake used his speed and ability to follow his blockers and made two great returns for touchdowns. His ability to field and return punts and kicks make him a major key for our success in all of our returns."
Schramm had a phenomenal game with six tackles (four solo), two interceptions, and a fumble recovery in Lakeland's win over the Cougars. The senior leads the Muskies in interceptions (two) and is fifth amongst the Muskies' tackle leaders with 37 tackles (30 solo) for the season. He has been a cornerstone of the Muskies' secondary since his freshman season, earning second team all-IBCFC honors as a sophomore.
"Josh has done a great job leading our secondary and making a lot of plays," said Doherty. "He just put himself in the right place to make plays and followed through with his assignments. His play on Saturday gave us great field position and momentum to finish the day with a big win."
