The Lakeland College men's volleyball team jump-started a promising 2008 season with a flawless 3-0 match record over the weekend, defeating UW-La Crosse, UW-Stout and UW-Platteville, 3-0, all of which are Wisconsin Volleyball Conference foes.
Although the Muskies let the third game of their match on Saturday with UW-La Crosse get somewhat tight, winning by a slim 30-27 margin, the squad was still able to go 3-0 against the Eagles by winning their first two games by identical 30-22 scores.
Junior Matt Clemens resumed his role as the Muskies' starting setter, tallying 34 assists, 11 digs and four blocks, while senior middle hitter Tim Frillman led the Muskies with a team-high 13 kills and added three blocks.
In Lakeland's second match of the day on Saturday, the Muskies cruised to victory over UW-Stout, 3-0 (30-19, 30-16, 30-19). Freshman middle hitter Beau Bradshaw made a strong debut with nine kills, two aces and three blocks while Clemens put up 18 assists to go with five blocks and three digs.
The squad moved on to their third victory of the weekend at UW-Platteville on Sunday, Jan. 27. Although the Muskies perhaps got a tougher match than they bargained for coming in, Lakeland still downed Pioneers, 3-0 (30-28, 30-26, 30-21). Senior defensive specialist Shawn Voelz led the team in the backcourt with 16 digs, while Frillman's efforts at the net of seven kills and three blocks led the offense. Freshman utility Chris Kubacki also played a solid match with 19 assists and three digs.
Lakeland will continue WVC match play with its first home contest of the season against UW-Whitewater on Friday, Feb. 1. Match time is set for 8 p.m.
