The Lakeland College men's volleyball team escaped with a big victory in a tight Wisconsin Volleyball Conference match against Marquette University, 3-1, on Thursday, Jan. 31, in Milwaukee, Wis.
Both teams jumped out to an aggressive start from game one, with the Muskies tallying a narrow 32-30 victory, followed by a more confident 30-22 decision in game two. The Golden Eagles turned the tables on Lakeland in game three, as they rallied to win 30-24, but the Muskies closed out game four with a 30-27 win to claim the match.
Senior outside hitter Matt Martin sparkled for the Muskies, as he recorded a team-high 21 kills followed by senior middle hitter Jared Rohland with 11 kills.
Blocking was also a major asset to the Lakeland squad, as it racked up a collective 35 block assists with eight solo blocks. Senior middle hitter Tim Frillman was a big part of those blocking efforts, as he led the team with 11 blocks while also chipping in nine kills. Martin and Rohland were also active on defense at the net with five blocks apiece, with Rohland also recording three service aces.
The win brings the Muskies to a perfect 4-0 in WVC match play, as Lakeland has already defeated UW-La Crosse, UW-Stout and UW-Platteville so far this season.
The Muskies will continue WVC match play with their first home contest of the season on Friday, Feb. 1. Match start time is set for 8 p.m.
