Baseball's Rally Falls Short against Carthage

Athletics - posted on 4/22/2008

Although the Lakeland College baseball team made things close with an 8-8 tie after seven innings with a tough Carthage College squad that has just one loss on the season, the Muskies were unable to pull off the non-conference win, falling 9-8 on Tuesday, April 22, at home.

Despite the loss, the Muskies (8-21 overall) battled back after facing a 5-0 deficit after the second inning. The home squad also had to make up for Carthage's solid power-hitting, as the Red Men rang up five home runs for the game with two in the second inning and two more back-to-back shots over the fence in the sixth inning.

Lakeland came back to out-score the Red Men, 8-3, in the third through the seventh innings to tie the game up at eight runs apiece heading into the eighth inning. Carthage went on to tally the winning run on a solo home run to close out all scoring for the game.

Senior Nate Brusewitz was tagged with the loss in the game after pitching the final three innings in relief for freshman Bill Miller. Brusewitz allowed just two hits, fanning two, while Miller gave up 12 hits with six strikeouts.

Junior first baseman Zach Hilbert led the Muskies on the offensive end with a 3-4 effort with two runs scored. Sophomore center fielder Jacob Heinemeyer and junior second baseman Alex Grant each added two hits with Heinemeyer racking up a team-high three RBIs.

The Muskies will return to Northern Athletics Conference play with a doubleheader at Benedictine University on Saturday, April 26. Game start time is set for 12 p.m. in Lisle, Ill.
