Lakeland splits with Edgewood in season finale

The Lakeland Baseball team ended its season on Saturday with a doubleheader split against Edgewood College in Verona, Wis.

Lakeland rallied to win game one, 8-7, but fell in the nightcap, 4-1. The Muskies end the season 9-27, 6-16 in Northern Athletics Conference play. The loss in the opening game knocked Edgewood out of the four-team NAC postseason tournament.

The Muskies started the scoring in the fifth inning of game one with an RBI from junior Zach Hilbert. Lakeland didn't hold the lead for long as the Eagles scored four times in the fifth. The Muskies cut the lead to one in the seventh and tie it in the eighth, but Edgewood took the lead back in the home half of the eighth scoring twice. Lakeland scored four times in the ninth, highlighted by a two-run homer from Doug Novak, and held on for the win.

Freshman Alex Ackerman got the pitching win in relief for Lakeland. Freshman Mike Ruzek started and went five innings, giving up four runs on seven hits while striking our five and walking two. Junior Mike Phillips pitched a pair of innings before Ackerman came on to finish.

Sophomore Jacob Heinemeyer led the way offensively in game one with three hits, two runs scored and an RBI. Dave Novak also had a solid game going 2-4 with an RBI and two runs.

In game two, the Muskie offense was limited to a run and eight hits by Edgewood pitchers Nathan Marlowe and Bill Dictus. Freshman Ryan Polizzi had two of those hits.

Senior Nate Brusewitz took the loss, pitching six innings and allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits. Junior Jake Van Camp went the final two innings, giving up just two hits and striking out two.
