The Lakeland College softball team recorded a pair of commanding performances over Maranatha Baptist Bible College, 27-6 and 10-2, in its Northern Athletics Conference doubleheader on Monday, April 7, for Lakeland's home opener.

Sophomore Sara Roberts added another win to the collection in game one, pitching three innings with seven strikeouts after coming in to relieve fellow sophomore Cassie Felton.

Although the Muskies (7-9, 6-2 NAC) started off the first game behind the Crusaders, 5-3, after the first inning, the home squad quickly took the lead and increased it with an 18-run third inning on seven hits. Sophomore Chelsea Coenen and senior Elisa Waltz each tallied triples in the inning, while senior Kourtney Peters cracked a three RBI home run in the first inning and led the team at the plate with a 3-for-4 effort.

Freshman Kayla VandeWettering picked up the win on the mound in the second game in five innings, allowing just four hits and fanning four. She helped hold the Crusaders scoreless until the fifth inning where they scored their only two runs.

VandeWettering also helped lead the Muskies at the plate along with Waltz, as both recorded two hits with Waltz tallying four RBIs with a home run.

Lakeland will continue its five-game home stand with a non-conference doubleheader with Lawrence University on Thursday, April 10. Game start time is set for 3 p.m.
