Softball Rebounds to Win Two Over CUW

The Lakeland College softball team got back on track in the Northern Athletics Conference with a pair of victories over Concordia University, Wis., 9-0, 6-2, on Wednesday, April 16, in Mequon, Wis.

"We were in a must-win situation today because we lost a game to Alverno yesterday," said Lakeland head coach Chad Buchmann. "I think that week off from playing really hurt us, but we came out functioning on all cylinders today with our defense, our base running and our hitting. We came out fired up and just attacked them."

The Muskies' (10-10, 9-3 NAC) primary offensive threats were certainly on top of their games, as sophomores KC Blahnik and Chelsea Coenen, and senior Allison Lock all had key hits. Blahnik went 5-9 from the plate for the day with one double while Coenen tallied a 2 RBI triple in the first game. Lock was equally impressive, blasting a huge home run into a stiff wind blowing in for three RBIs in the second game and hitting a double in the first game.

"All of the people we depend on with our seniors and the top of our batting order really came through today," Buchmann said. "KC Blahnik had some nice hits and Elisa Waltz had some great defensive stops. Yesterday we weren't as aggressive and we weren't making the adjustments we needed to, but today we were able to make a turnaround and get fired up."

The Muskies also got top efforts from sophomore Sara Roberts, who pitched both games in their entirety to pick up another two wins in 13 innings total on the mound, allowing 15 hits with two strikeouts. She also stepped up to the plate to hit a double in the second game.

"Sara was just a workhorse out there today," Buchmann said. "She really got us out of some jams where Concordia had runners on second and third and she was able to help get that third out."

Lakeland will look to continue its new-found win streak into Friday's NAC doubleheader with Edgewood College.

"I feel good about playing them at home," Buchmann said of facing the Eagles. "We need to make sure that we hit like we did today and that our seniors and the top of our batting order steps up."

Game start time vs. Edgewood is set for 3:30 p.m. at Lakeland.
