Athletics - posted on 4/16/2008
The Lakeland College baseball team dropped to 5-6 in the Northern Athletics Conference following a pair of losses to Rockford College, 9-4, 11-7, on Wednesday, April 16, in Rockford, Ill.
Junior lefty Jake Van Camp took the loss on the mound in the first game with four innings pitched, giving up five hits and seven walks before junior Mike Phillips came in to finish the game. Freshman Mike Ruzek suffered the loss in game two, giving up nine hits and four walks before being relieved by sophomore Lee Chepil for the final four innings.
The Muskies (8-13) also picked up six errors on the day, four in game one, making a tough Rockford squad even tougher.
Lakeland's offense did kick into high gear during the second game to tie up the score at seven runs apiece in the top of the eighth inning. The Muskies scored three runs off hits by freshman Andrew Schartner, sophomore Zach Hilbert and freshman Cal Post. However, the Regents answered back with four runs of their own in the bottom of the eighth, and the Muskies were unable to answer back.
Schartner, Hilbert and freshman Jeremy Williams each recorded two hits in the second game with Schartner blasting a home run in the sixth inning. Freshman catcher Dave Novak led the team at the plate in the first game with a 3-4 effort and a double while freshman Ed Kozlowski, sophomore Jacob Heinemeyer and junior Adam Brown each added two hits apiece. Two of Kozlowski's hits were doubles and Heinemeyer added a triple.
The Muskies will continue their season with a non-conference doubleheader with Ripon College on Friday, April 18. Game start time is set for 2:30 p.m. at Lakeland.
