Big Hitting Helps Softball Roll over Raiders

Athletics - posted on 4/19/2008

Big hitting helped the Lakeland College softball team overwhelm Milwaukee School of Engineering, 12-0 and 15-1, in just five innings per game in its Northern Athletics Conference doubleheader on Saturday, April 19, in Milwaukee, Wis.

Freshman Kayla VandeWettering provided a good portion of that offensive boost for the Muskies (13-11, 12-4 NAC), as she launched a home run and a triple in game one followed by a double in the second game to finish with a collective 5-6 effort at the plate with seven RBIs. Sophomore Chelsea Coenen also recorded a home run batting a perfect 2-for-2 in the second game to go with a pair of doubles on the day and three RBIs.

"We were really on with our offense today," said Lakeland head coach Chad Buchmann. "Everyone hit, everyone ran, everyone scored and we had no errors on defense, which was great to see."

Sophomore ace Sara Roberts picked up the win in two innings of work in the circle in game one with no hits allowed and three strikeouts before sophomore Cassie Felton came in to pitch the remainder of the game. Felton gave up just one hit, fanning three. VandeWettering picked up her first collegiate win in game two, allowing three hits with six strikeouts.

Lakeland's offense was at its best in game two, as the Muskies scored nine runs in the third inning to make it a 12-1 game, then closed out the game for good with four more in the fourth inning. Senior Kourtney Peters, VandeWettering and Coenen led the team at the plate for the game with two hits apiece while Peters racked up a team-high four RBIs.

Lakeland will continue its NAC schedule with tomorrow's doubleheader against Rockford College. The Muskies will also celebrate Senior Day and Parents' Day on their home field. Game start time is set for 12 p.m.
