The Lakeland College women's basketball team had no answers for a hot Edgewood offense as they dropped a 70-53 Northern Athletics Conference decision Tuesday night at Moose and Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
The Eagles shot over 50 percent in both halves, knocking down 54 percent of their field goal attempts on the night while holding Lakeland to 34 percent from the floor.
"Edgewood's ball movement was really good and they were patient getting into their offense," said Lakeland head coach Teri Johnson. "They got great inside looks and they shot very well. They executed much better on offense than we did."
Lakeland (15-7, 10-5) started the night on a positive note, jumping out to a 9-2 lead in the first 4:30 of the first half.
The Muskies struggled to find the hoop in the next seven minutes, failing to register a point until 8:14 remained in the first half. By that time Edgewood used a 14-point run in taking a 16-11 lead.
Trailing 35-21, Lakeland clawed its way back before halftime, scoring the last four points of the half to enter the break down seven.
The second half belonged to Edgewood as the Muskies had no answer for NAC leading scorer Megan Scheele. Scheele, averaging 23.4 points per game in conference play entering tonight's contest, recorded 17 of her 25 points in as Edgewood pushed its lead to 20 before finishing the 13-point victory.
KC Blahnik (Gladstone, Mich.) and Kasey Gussert (Kingsford, Mich.) both led Lakeland with 11 point on the evening.
The Muskies struggled from the field, completing only 10-of-29 shots in each half.
"We had trouble getting to the free throw line and we missed a lot of shots in the paint," Johnson said. "Both of those really hurt us tonight."
Lakeland shot 6-of-11 from the line, attempting seven fewer free throws than Edgewood made as the Eagles finished the game 18-22 from the charity stripe.
The Muskies return to the road this Saturday, matching up with Marian at 2 p.m. in the first half of a men's/women's doubleheader.
