Softball Drops Final NAC Regular-Season Doubleheader to Benedictine

Athletics - posted on 4/24/2008

The Lakeland College softball team slipped to .500 on the season and wrapped up its Northern Athletics Conference regular-season schedule with a pair of NAC losses to Benedictine University, 3-2 and 13-5, on a rainy Thursday afternoon in Sheboygan, Wis.

Sophomore Sara Roberts went the distance in the circle in the first game, suffering the loss while giving up 16 hits with two strikeouts. Sophomore Cassie Felton was tagged with the loss in the second game, throwing just over two innings while senior Jenny Zimmerman pitched relief. Felton allowed six hits with four walks.

The Muskies (16-16, 15-9 NAC) kept things close with the Eagles in the first game, as the score was deadlocked at two runs apiece after the fifth inning to force an extra inning. However, it was Benedictine who gained the advantage on a solo home run to take the game.

Senior first baseman Allison Lock and senior short stop Elisa Waltz both hit .500 in the first game, while sophomore second baseman KC Blahnik racked up her second home run of the season on a solo shot in the fifth inning.

Part two of the doubleheader saw the start of a chilly rainfall, which seemed to give the Muskies' pitchers some issues. Two high-scoring innings by the Eagles put the game out of reach by the end of the fifth inning. However, sophomore center fielder Chelsea Coenen seemed unaffected by the less-than-ideal conditions, racking up two triples to lead the squad with a 2-3 effort from the plate for the game. Felton also found her stride in the batter's box, tallying a triple of her own for two RBIs in the fourth inning.

The Muskies will wrap up their regular-season schedule with a pair of non-conference doubleheaders on the road this weekend to prepare them for next week's NAC Tournament. On Saturday, Lakeland will face St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wis., followed by Ripon College on Sunday in Ripon, Wis. Game start time for both days is set for 1 p.m.
