Muskies suffer heart-breaking loss at MSOE
Athletics - posted on 10/22/2008
The Lakeland men's soccer team surrendered a first-half goal with just 8 seconds remaining, then was unable to recover, taking a gut-wrenching 2-1 defeat at MSOE in a Northern Athletics Conference contest at Uihlein Soccer Park in Milwaukee.
"We had the game and gave it away," Lakeland head coach David Madsen said. "Just prior to that goal, we were on the other end of the field for a corner kick. We took our rips when we needed to be patient, and they ended up taking it down and scoring."
The goal came after the Muskies (7-6-1, 5-3-1 NAC) took a 1-0 lead courtesy of freshman midfielder Adam Benson (Anoka, Minn.), who headed one into the back of the net off a throw-in by freshman midfielder Alex Finke (Beaver Dam).
The Muskies fought harrd in the second half, but were unable to break the defense of the Raiders (9-4-2, 6-3-1) and even up the match.
"After they scored in the second half, we battled and created several chances to score near the end," Madsen said.
The Muskies return to action this Saturday to take on Benedictine University for a 2 p.m. match at home. Seniors Kevin Fitchett, Matt Van Drunen and Takumi Yabara will be honored at halftime as part of the Senior Day festivities at Lakeland.
