Lakeland drops third straight in 4-2 loss at Concordia Wisconsin

Athletics - posted on 10/21/2008

The Lakeland women's soccer team surrendered four unanswered goals following an early goal in a 4-2 loss at Concordia University Wisconsin in a Northern Athletics Conference match-up in Mequon.

The Muskies (8-9, 4-6 NAC) converted on a penalty kick by freshman midfielder Kristi Borts (Greenfield) in the 21st minute after freshman forward Lindsay Rogers (Sheboygan) was fouled to take an early 1-0 lead.

However, the Falcons (8-2, 9-5) ran off four unanswered goals spread over the two halves to take a three-score lead, one that the Muskies were unable to overcome.

"We came out well at the start and drew the penalty kick for the early lead," Lakeland head coach David Madsen said. "Then we played some sloppy defense and let them back in the game, which really broke our confidence."

After going down 4-1, Madsen said the team came to life a little bit, but could only find the back of the net once more. Freshman defender Autumn Gaylor (Ingleside, Ill.) converted a penalty kick for her first goal of the season in the 80th minute.

"We got some good offensive pushes and challenges going," Madsen said, "and I though we actually deserved a third [penalty kick]. But on the whole, we just couldn't squeeze them hard enough to finish off the game."

The Muskies return home for Senior Day this Saturday, as they take on Benedictine University at 12 p.m.
