GEORGETOWN, Texas - Decimated by a 15-0 run which carried over from the first half to the second, the Lakeland men's basketball team suffered an 83-52 setback against No. 22 Trinity University on Thursday night in the Southwestern/Trinity Classic at Southwestern.
After freshman forward Jake Schwarz brought the Muskies (4-2, 2-1 Northern Athletics Conference) to within 34-27 with 2:23 remaining in the half, the Tigers took their first double-digit lead just before the half and stretched their lead to 49-27 less than four minutes into the second half.
"Trinity is a very good basketball team," Lakeland head coach Aaron Aanonsen said. "They have a great program, especially in their recent history. Our guys are young, and they came out on their heels and didn't do the little things they needed to do to win the game."
Lakeland shot just 31.4 percent from the field for the contest, while Trinity converted on 48.4 percent of its chances. The Muskies were bothered by the length and physicality of the Tigers (7-1).
"Their size and strength took us out of our game a little bit," Aanonsen said. "It was a good wake-up call for our guys to see what it takes to play at a championship level."
Aanonsen was pleased with his team's effort in the final 10 minutes, especially by reserve guards Hunter Wolf, Brandon Young and Sam Schroeder, who each logged at least 12 minutes of play for the contest.
"We played extremely hard in the later part of the second half," Aanonsen said. "We didn't give up. Those guys looked at it as a process and tried to make themselves better.
Schwarz (Sheboygan) led the Muskies with 13 points and seven rebounds, and shot 9-of-11 from the free throw line.
Four players scored in double figures for Trinity, which made nine 3-pointers and shot over 59 percent in the second half.
Senior forward Pete Worth (Sheboygan) posted nine points and a team-high eight rebounds for Lakeland.
The Muskies return to action tomorrow against tournament host Southwestern University at 7 p.m.
