Muskies jump out to early lead, hold on at Northland

Six players scored in double figures as the Lakeland men's basketball team jumped out to a double-digit lead at halftime en route to an 84-76 non-conference victory over Northland College on Saturday night in Ashland.

The Muskies (5-3, 2-1 Northern Athletics Conference) jumped out to a 35-20 halftime lead and held on in the second half despite surrendering 56 points in the period.

Lakeland shot a sizzling 69.6 percent in the second half and 58.8 percent for the game.

Freshman forward Jake Schwarz (Sheboygan) paced Lakeland with 17 points, his fourth consecutive contest as the team's leading scorer. He also collected a team-high nine rebounds.

Joining Schwarz in double figures were junior guard Khendal Andrews (16 points), senior forward Pete Worth (11) and freshmen guards Eric Vandivier (12), Hunter Wolf (11) and Josh Regal (10).

Northland (2-9, 1-1 Upper Midwest Athletic Conference) shot 50 percent in the second half after converting only 36 percent of their field goal attempts in the first.

The contest marked the Muskies' first game since Dec. 19, when Lakeland suffered a 55-51 setback at Southwestern (Texas).

Lakeland returns to action tomorrow at Finlandia (Mich.) University for a 5 p.m. tip-off.
