MADISON - Decimated by early shooting woes, the Lakeland men's basketball team trailed by 19 at halftime and was unable to recover, suffering an 86-66 defeat at Edgewood in a Northern Athletics Conference North Division showdown at the Todd Wehr Edgedome.
The Muskies (6-4, 2-2 NAC) cut the Eagles' lead to 59-46 with 11:49 remaining in the second half after a free throw by junior forward Anthony Cobb (Milwaukee). However, Lakeland was unable to sustain any kind of run as the Edgewood lead balooned to as many as 24 points in the frame.
"I liked that even though we were down 19 at the half, our guys really battled (in the second half," Lakeland head coach Aaron Aanonsen said. "There were times we were on the verge of coming back. We had it to close to 10 or 11 a couple times, and we were a wide-open 3-pointer or 10-footer away from getting their lead to single digits."
Lakeland shot just 8-of-31 (26 percent) in the first half, including a 1-for-9 mark from 3-point range.
Conversely, Edgewood (5-7, 3-1) shot a cool 59 percent in the opening period and converted six 3-pointers.
"Defensively, to start the game, we guarded very well for the first 30 seconds (of each possession)," Aanonsen said. "I thought there were numerous times they hit a shot at the end of the shot clock to kill our water a little bit and shut us off. We just couldn't get into any rhythm after that."
The Eagles used a 16-6 run to start the game and a 10-0 spurt midway through the first half to extend their lead to as many as 20 in the frame.
Freshman point guard Josh Regal (Suring) led Lakeland with 21 points (17 in the second half) to go along with five assists. Freshman forward Jake Schwarz (Sheboygan) posted 17 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Cobb finished with nine points and eight rebounds.
Lakeland forward Pete Worth (Sheboygan), the Muskies' lone senior and an important floor leader, did not play due to a knee injury. There is no timetable set for his return.
"It's definitely key playing without Pete right now," Aanonsen said. "We're still trying to find an identity without, basically, our team MVP and emotional leader. He's our team captain and only senior, and the only guy besides (junior) Khendal Andrews who saw significant minutes for us in our conference championship run (last season)."
The Muskies return to action this Friday for a home contest against Silver Lake College. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
