Muskies sneak past Falcons
Athletics - posted on 9/18/2008
After finding themselves down two sets to one, the Lakeland College women's volleyball team battled back to beat Concordia University Wisconsin (5-7, 1-1 NAC) 3-2 in Lakeland's home opener.
In the fourth set, the Falcons took a commanding 6-0 lead. The Muskies (6-4, 2-0) battled back to make the deficit 12-9. After a Falcon timeout, with senior right side Heidi Kramer (Green Bay) serving, the Muskies ran off 12 straight points to take a 21-12 lead. The Muskies would go on to take the set 25-16.
"We felt like we did the right things, then things blew up, then we felt like we were in bad rotations and we started winning," Lakeland head coach Chad Schreiber said. "Nothing made sense tonight, but we got a win, so we're going to just be happy with the win, and try to refocus.
"We still don't feel like we've hit any kind of stride, so we feel pretty fortunate to be where we're at right now."
The Muskies took the first set with a score of 25-16. They then dropped the next two games 22-25 and 20-25 before righting the ship to take the final two games, with a 15-8 victory in the fifth and deciding game.
Senior setter Jessica Sparling (Addison, Ill.) had 51 assists and junior middle hitter Kim Linger (Eldorado) registered 16 kills to pace the offensive attack. Junior libero Tonia Strebelinksi (Berlin) led the defense with 21 digs.
The Muskies will be in action again on Tuesday Sept. 23, when they travel to
Watertown to face the Maranatha Baptist Bible College Crusaders.
