Muskies sweep Sabres 3-0

On Tuesday night at Woltzen Gymnasium, the Lakeland College volleyball team took a three-set sweep from Marian University, in the process handing the Sabres their first Northern Athletics Conference loss of the season.

The Muskies (11-5, 4-0 NAC) took the first set easily with a 25-13 over the Sabres (5-14, 2-1). The second set did not go as easily, as the Sabres nearly evened the score at 11-10. The Muskies then ran off nine straight points and fourteen of the last eighteen to take a 25-14 win. The Muskies took the third set 25-15 after scoring on eight of nine points in the middle of the set to put it out of reach.

"I'm glad we took control from the opening of the first set and held control all night," Lakeland head coach Chad Schreiber said. "That was our goal, to get different line-ups in together and get some playing time for some people who have been practicing hard and not seen much of a reward on the court for it yet."

Junior outside hitter Brittanie Paulus (Belgium) paced the Muskies with 10 kills and nine digs. Sophomore setter Kristine Raeder (Sheboygan Falls) posted a team-leading 15 assists, while junior libero Tonia Strebelinski (Berlin) notched four service aces.

The Muskies will play two more times during Homecoming week at Lakeland.  On Friday they host the Dominican Stars (5-11, 0-2) at 7 p.m., and on Saturday they welcome the Concordia Chicago Cougars (10-7, 2-0) at 2 p.m.

"We thought last Saturday, in our final match of the Wheaton Tournament, we found a level we want to play at," Schreiber said. "So we've been focusing on having that be our bottom level, not our top level.

"Our goal all week has been to never get lower than that level we found in that match. If we can continue to play hard and that's our new lowest level of play, we'll be well-prepared."
