Muskies split pair on final day of Elmhurst Invitational

Athletics - posted on 8/30/2008

The Lakeland women's volleyball team mirrored its results from Friday by closing out play in the Elmhurst Invitational on Saturday by splitting a pair of matches to finish 2-2 in the tournament.

The Muskies opened up play Saturday with a 25-18, 25-14, 26-24 victory over Centre, and concluded action with a loss, 25-14, 25-13, 25-16, to Carthage.

"This weekend exposed what we need to work on," said Lakeland coach Chad Schreiber. "Leaving there with a 2-2 record is acceptable, but not what we as a team strived for. I felt that we never got going as a team this weekend. By improving individually, I feel we'll be able to improve as a team.

"Playing in a tournament like this to open our season lets us work out the kinks in our game before we reach conference play, lets us work out our concerns. The last couple years, we've tried not to separate non-conference play from our conference schedule as we believe that we're an NCAA tournament-caliber program and we don't want to depend on the conference bid to determine post-season play."

The Muskies return to action Friday, Sept. 5, at 2 p.m. against Luther at the Sugarloaf Classic in Winona, Minn.
