Lakeland women's volleyball picked to repeat as NAC champs by coaches

The Lakeland College women's volleyball team has been picked to repeat as Northern Athletics Conference champions by the league's coaches, the conference announced late Wednesday.
The Muskies, who received 11 of 13 first place votes, enter the upcoming season after completing a perfect run to the NAC regular season title and conference tournament crown. The team returns five starters, including last year's conference Player of the Year, junior outside hitter Brittanie Paulus (Belgium), and a first-team All-NAC selection in senior setter Jessica Sparling (Addison, Ill.).
"As the defending conference champion, I don't think this puts a target on our backs that we didn't have before," Lakeland head coach Chad Schreiber said. "Our goal will remain the same - to repeat as NAC champions."
Lakeland finished with a 23-14 overall record on the season, but was not selected for an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament. This season, if the Muskies take the NAC Tournament title, they will receive an automatic bid to the national championship tournament.
Benedictine University (9-3, 27-7), which finished as runner-up to the Muskies in the 2007 conference tournament, is tabbed second by the coaches. The Eagles, who received two first place votes, returns NAC Rookie of the Year and first team All-NAC member Kayla Leyden.
Concordia University (Wis.) finished second in the 2007 regular season with a 10-2 conference record. CUW is picked to finish third in the league.
