The Lakeland women's volleyball team found its stride this weekend, finishing with a 3-1 record at the two-day Wheaton Invitational last weekend in Wheaton, Ill.
The Muskies (3-0 Northern Athletics Conference, 10-5 overall) split a pair of matches on Friday. Lakeland defeated Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in five sets, 15-25, 25-19, 25-17, 16-25, 15-9 in the opening match of the day. The Muskies were then defeated by Wheaton, the tournament champion, in three sets, 25-20, 25-13, 25-17.
On Saturday, the team swept two matches. The Muskies took down Lake Forest 25-21, 25-19, 25-19, which was followed by a five-set win over Cornell 16-25, 25-21, 20-25, 25-15, 15-11.
"I was very happy with how the weekend ended up," Lakeland head coach Chad Schreiber said. "We did so many good things as individuals and as a team in that last match against Cornell that I feel really good about the weekend now that we've played that.
"We think if this is our new level, we'll be in good shape. If we can play at the level we were able to find in the Cornell match, we should be in good shape."
For the weekend, junior outside hitter Brittanie Paulus (Belgium)
led the Muskie attack with a team-leading 45 kills offensively and 35 digs on the defensive side, which was second on the team.
"Brittanie is one of those players who won some individual battles within herself," Schreiber said. "Offensively, she began to mix up shots, and that's what's always made her effective, not just swinging for velocity, but mixing in velocity with shots, tips and pushes to the corner. The variety of shots she added back into her game made her valuable offensively, which I think has been holding her back in other parts of her game."
This week, the Muskies will play three home NAC matches. On Tuesday, Lakeland will host Marian University at 7 p.m. Dominican University comes to town on Friday for a 7 p.m. match, followed by a 2 p.m. contest against Concordia Chicago on Saturday.
"Things feel right, we're coming off of our best match of the season, we finally get to play at home for an extended period of time after having only one home match to this point," Schreiber said. "They're important conference matches, so hopefully everything comes at the right time here."
