The Lakeland women's volleyball team split a pair of matches on Saturday to finish 2-2 at the two-day UW-Whitewater Volleyball Invitational in Whitewater.
The Muskies (22-10) began the day by knocking off Midwest Collegiate Conference champion St. Ambrose (Iowa) University 3-2 (26-24, 21-25, 17-25, 25-22, 15-6).
"It was a struggle, but we were able to come back from being down two sets to one and win that fifth set," Lakeland head coach Chad Schreiber said.
Senior right side Heidi Kramer (Green Bay) led the way for the Muskies with 16 kills up front. Junior outside hitter Brittanie Paulus (Belgium) added 11 kills as well as 18 digs. Senior setter Jessica Sparling (Addison, Ill.) registered 53 assists.
In the day's second contest, the Muskies had No. 11 UW-Whitewater on the ropes, but fell to the Warhawks 3-1 (19-25, 25-22, 18-25, 16-25). Paulus posted 12 kills and 12 digs to lead the Muskies.
"The differences in the match were a few shanked passes and a few mental errors," Schreiber said. "We hung right with them for the entire match."
Overall, the team was pleased with the weekend's outcome.
"I'm extremely pleased with the 2-2 record," Schreiber said. "We learned a lot this weekend about the caliber of teams we would have to face if we end up making the NCAA Tournament."
The Muskies return to action on Monday for a Northern Athletics Conference Tournament quarterfinal match against Maranatha Baptist. Lakeland, the league's regular season champion and No. 1 seed in the tournament, will host the eighth-seeded Crusaders at 7 p.m.
The Muskies aim for their second consecutive NAC Tournament title, which would qualify the team for an automatic bid into the Division III NCAA Tournament.
