Miller earns conference player of the week honors

Athletics - posted on 9/16/2008

Lakeland senior linebacker Brent Miller has received Northern Athletics Conference Student-Athlete of the Week honors for defense in football for the week from Sept. 8 to Sept. 14, the league announced late Monday.

Miller, a Menasha native, racked up 14 tackles, including 3.5 for a loss, two sacks and an interception in the Muskies' 20-0 loss to the College of Mount St. Joseph last Saturday at Taylor Field in Sheboygan.

"I'm very happy that Brent was named defensive player of the week," Lakeland head coach Kevin Doherty said. "He's had an outstanding season so far, through training camp and into the early part of our season. He's really evolving as our best leader on the field vocally, but he's also backing it up by his performance on the field, which I think has a lot of merit. He played an outstanding game, the stats are fantastic.

"To go along with the rest of our linebacking corps, that's impressive, because all of our linebackers have been putting up very good stats thus far. For him to have a standout game like that and be recognized in a loss is a great testament to the type of player that he is."

Lakeland fans should expect more performances like this out of Miller, a four-year starter in the program.

"Brent Miller's kind of a guy we rely on to get us lined up on defense and he's one of our emotional leaders," defensive coordinator Colin Bruton said. "He's a guy that's been around the program and really cares about this program. He doesn't do anything real flashy, but he's real good at everything he does. He's a guy we can put in pass coverage, he's a guy that will blitz quite a bit off the edge. He's a really solid all-around football player."

Each week, the league's head coaches nominate a player from their own team to be voted on for each sport by NAC sports information directors.
