Paulus named conference player of the week

Athletics - posted on 9/30/2008

Junior outside hitter Brittanie Paulus has received the Northern Athletics Conference Student-Athlete of the Week in women's volleyball for the week of Sept. 22-28, the league announced late Monday.

Paulus, a Belgium native, collected a team-leading 54 kills, 45 digs and seven service aces to lead the Muskies to a 3-1 record at last weekend's Wheaton Invitational in Wheaton, Ill.

"Brittanie is one of those players who won some individual battles within herself," Lakeland head coach Chad Schreiber said. "Offensively, she began to mix up shots, and that's what's always made her effective, not just swinging for velocity, but mixing in velocity with shots, tips and pushes to the corner. The variety of shots she added back into her game made her valuable offensively, which I think has been holding her back in other parts of her game."

Lakeland defeated Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in five sets on Friday, followed by back-to-back wins over Lake Forest (three sets) and Cornell (five sets). The Muskies' lone defeat came Friday night at the hands of tournament champion Wheaton.

Each week, the league's head coaches nominate a player from their own team to be voted on for each sport by NAC sports information directors.
