Paulus earns all-region recognition

Lakeland junior Brittanie Paulus has been selected as a member of the Division III All-Midwest Region team by the American Volleyball Coaches Association, the AVCA announced Thursday.

Paulus, a Belgium native and Ozaukee High School graduate, was an honorable mention All-Midwest Region honoree as a sophomore in 2007.

"I am very excited to move up from honorable mention last year to being in the top 14 in the Midwest region this year," Paulus said. "I was a little disappointed because I didn't get as much recognition from our conference this year after winning the conference player of the year last season, so getting the regional award is truly an honor."

Paulus registered 337 kills, 444 digs and 28 service aces for the season, leading the Muskies in each category. The outside hitter posted a pair of Northern Athletics Conference Student-Athlete of the Week awards for women's volleyball and was recently named a first-team all-conference member.

"It's nice that people have taken notice, because Brittanie can't be evaluated by her numbers," Lakeland head coach Chad Schreiber said. "She doesn't dominate one statistical category, but has substantial numbers in all areas."

A co-captain, Paulus is known for being an intense competitor and was an emotional leader on a 2008 Muskie squad that posted a 25-11 overall record and a perfect 12-0 regular season mark in conference. Lakeland notched its second consecutive season with a regular season conference championship and tournament title, and made its first NCAA Division III Tournament appearance since 2005.

"Brittanie plays with the competitiveness that I'd like to see the rest of our team play with," Schreiber said. "There are times she doesn't play well, as there is with every player, but it's not because she is unprepared or unwilling to compete."
