The No. 12 Lakeland men's volleyball team sprinted to a convincing 25-12, 25-16, 25-16 home victory over Carthage in a Wisconsin Volleyball Conference match-up at Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.

The Muskies (2-0) raced out to a 14-6 lead in the first set and didn't look back.

"We were able to mix in some different line-ups throughout the match, and we were pleased with the results," Lakeland coach Chad Schreiber said.

Offensively, senior captain Joe Julkowski (Carol Stream, Ill.) paced Lakeland with eight kills. Sophomore right side hitter Chris Kubacki (Vernon Hills, Ill.) chipped in with eight kills. Freshman setter Mitch Wiskirchen (Schaumburg, Ill.) posted a team-high 26 assists in the match.

Defensively, the Muskies were led by freshman libero Andrew Cheever (Milwaukee), who had nine digs in the back row.

Players and coaches also expressed satisfaction with the support of the large crowd on hand for the team's home opener.

"We are grateful for the crowd support," Schreiber said. "We will need them next week as well against a tough Marquette squad."

This Saturday, the Muskies will head to Oshkosh for the season's first Midwest 10 Playdate. Lakeland is scheduled to play six matches on the day, including four against ranked opponents.

Lakeland returns home on Feb. 12 to take on No. 18 Marquette.
