Lakeland beats Marquette for third time this season

Athletics - posted on 3/3/2009

The No. 15 Lakeland men's volleyball team defeated Marquette 25-17, 28-30, 25-16, 25-19 in a Wisconsin Volleyball Conference match on Tuesday night in Milwaukee.

The Muskies (21-4, 6-0 WVC) knocked off the Golden Eagles for the third time in four matches so far this season. Most recently, Marquette had defeated Lakeland 25-21, 23-25, 15-10 in the Midwest 10 Tournament final last Saturday.

Lakeland struggled through the first two sets, but recovered nicely in the final two to put away the Golden Eagles.

"We played at different levels throughout the match, but we finished cleanly," Lakeland coach Chad Schreiber said. "We didn't get ourselves into a serving rhythm at any time during the match, but our serve receive was again a strength at the end of the match."

Senior outside hitter Joe Julkowski (Carol Stream, Ill.) led the Muskies with 23 kills and 17 digs. Freshman libero Andrew Cheever (Milwaukee) posted 16 digs, while freshman setter Mitch Wiskirchen (Schaumburg, Ill.) registered 44 assists.

Three players recorded six blocks apiece for Lakeland.

The Muskies will take on No. 1 UW-Oshkosh this Thursday at 8 p.m. in a battle between the conference's elite in Oshkosh. Neither team has a WVC loss as of Tuesday evening.
