Athletics - posted on 12/10/2008

Lakeland seniors John Wagner and Matt Pawlyk have been named to the 2008 D3football.com All-North Region second team, as the site announced its 2008 All-Region teams earlier this week.

Wagner, a 6-2, 215-pound linebacker, led the Northern Athletics Conference in total tackles with 124. The Kewaunee native averaged just over 12 tackles, placing him tied for sixth in all of NCAA Division III. He also tied for the team lead in tackles for loss (12.5) and also posted 3.0 sacks.

A third-team All-North Region selection last season, Wagner was named the NAC's Defensive Player of the Year in late November.

Pawlyk, a Marinette native, led the conference in receiving yards (980) and touchdowns (13), and was second in receptions (55) for the 2008 season. His 980 yards place him second in Lakeland history for receiving yards in one season.

The 6-5, 200-pound wide receiver was tabbed the league's Offensive Player of the Year award.

The All-Region awards, which began in 2005, are voted on by sports information directors from the North, South, East and West regions, and D3football.com staff members. A total of 75 players were selected in the North region from 176 nominations by Division III member schools.

For the third straight year, Mount Union (Ohio) running back Nate Kmic was named the North region's Offensive Player of the Year. Wheaton (Ill.) cornerback Pete Ittersagen was recognized as the region's Defensive Player of the Year.
