Wrestling team, Sutter receive national ranking

Athletics - posted on 12/11/2008

The Lakeland wrestling team made its 2008-09 debut in the Brute-Adidas National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III team rankings at No. 27, as the NWCA released its updated national poll earlier this week.

Junior heavyweight Adam Sutter (Gladstone, Mich.) also received a ranking at No. 10 in his weight division, his first spot in the national poll this season.

The Muskies' 2-4 dual record is slightly deceiving, as three of the squad's losses have come to teams placed in the top 10 of the same rankings. The team's other loss came at the hands of UW-Parkside, a NCAA Division II member.

Last Saturday, Lakeland edged out UW-Oshkosh for a team championship at the MSOE Invite in Milwaukee. Sutter, and seniors Jonas Flok (157 pounds) and Kory Thiel (141) took home individual titles to lead the Muskies.

Sutter, a 2008 alternate in the NCAA Division III Tournament and defending Northern Wrestling Association champion, is off to a 10-0 start individually this season. Sutter won four matches at the MSOE Invite to take first place in the 285-pound division.

The Muskies head to Las Vegas, Nev., for the Desert Duals on Dec. 21. For more information on that tournament, click here.
