TUCSON, Ariz.- The Lakeland College softball team won its opening game of the 2009 season, defeating Augsburg 3-2 before falling to Central 11-2 in the team's first two games of its five-day, 10-game run at the Tucson Invitational Games.

Junior Sara Roberts (Escanaba, Mich.) pitched all seven innings for the Muskies (1-1), picking up the victory over Augsburg.

Chelsea Coenen (Wightstown) went 2-3 at the plate, collecting a double and a triple to lead the offense with two runs in the game. Nicole Guerts (Freedom) also recorded a triple as Lakeland put up six hits in the one-run victory.

"Anytime you can go from the gym to dirt and be successful, shows that what we're doing in the fall and early spring is paying off," Lakeland coach Chad Buchmann said.

Lakeland was not as fortunate in the second game of the day. The Muskies struggled defensively and fell behind early before dropping an 11-2 decision to Central.

Kayla VandeWettering (Appleton) and Alyssa Nelson (Germantown) each drove in Sam Shepeck (Gladstone, Mich.) in the second and fifth innings, respectively, to record the Muskies' lone runs.

"Central came into today's game with a 4-1 record, and their play backed up how good of a program they are," said Buchmann.

Lakeland returns to action Monday at 1 p.m. against Amhurst and 3:30 p.m. against No. 2 UW-Eau Claire
