TUCSON, Ariz.- The Lakeland College softball team ended its five-day stay at the Tucson Invitational Games with a pair of victories Thursday afternoon, knocking off Ponoma-Pitzer 7-6 and downing St. Mary 7-1 to complete its spring break trip with a .500 record.
Trailing 6-4 in the top of the seventh, Chelsea Coenen opened the inning with a single and Sam Shepeck followed with a double. After Christina Moore reached on an error, Cori Zornacki scored one run on a fielder's choice to second. Alyssa Nelson drove Moore home on a single and Zornacki was doubled in by Corine Demske as the Muskies scored three runs in the 7th to take the lead.
Sara Roberts came back and closed out the seventh to seal the Lakeland victory. Roberts, who started the contest, was relieved by Nelson in the fifth. Cassie Felton, who entered in the sixth, picked up the victory.
"We used some timely hitting today to pull off the comeback," Lakeland head coach Chad Buchmann said.
Coenen and Shepeck paced the offense with two hits apiece, and six other Muskies had one hit.
Game two of the day against St. Mary (Minn.) was a much easier task for Lakeland. The Muskies opened up the game with two runs in the first and followed with three in the third. One run in each of the fifth and seventh innings concluded the Muskie offensive output as the Cardinals scored their lone run in the sixth.
Moore and Roberts each paced the Lakeland offense with three hits and three RBI's. Coenen and Nelson also recorded multiple hits with two apiece.
"This week showed me that we can rely on our younger players to pull through for us," said Buchmann. "Our freshman got a lot of playing time this past week, and our returners are starting to get back in mid-season form. We played the defending national champions tough, and despite some defensive lapses, are coming back to Wisconsin with our best spring break record in the past five years."
Lakeland opens up its 2009 NAC schedule Wednesday, March 25 with a doubleheader at Edgewood. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m.
