FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Lakeland baseball team surrendered 33 runs in a pair of games on Wednesday, falling 22-3 against Bethel after dropping an 11-6 decision to Babsel in the first game of a doubleheader at Terry Park.
The Muskies (1-6) have now lost four straight after capturing their first victory of the season on Monday.
Trailing 5-4 in the top of the sixth of Game 1, Lakeland had a chance to tie the game when junior centerfielder Jake Heinemeyer hit a rocket up the middle for a base hit. Catcher Brad Chrudimsky, who led off the inning with a single, tried to score from second base, but was gunned down by Babson's Peter O'Toole in a close play at the plate.
The play swung the momentum in favor of the Beavers, who rallied for four runs in the bottom half of the frame off Lakeland starting pitcher Garrett Morris to take a commanding 9-4 lead.
Morris, who took the loss, tossed seven innings, the longest outing by a Muskie starting pitcher this season.
"Garrett Morris was awesome for us today in his first collegiate start," Lakeland coach Chris Thousand said. "He battled through and made adjustments on his own."
Babson's Jeff Buress, who pitched five innings, picked up the win.
Heinemeyer led the Muskies offensively with three hits and three runs scored. Junior third baseman Doug Novak knocked in a pair for Lakeland.
Against Bethel, the Muskies fell behind 10-0 after 3 ½ innings and were unable to recover.
After Lakeland posted a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth, Bethel (5-5) responded with a seven-run fifth inning to take control of the game, which was called after seven innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.
Freshman reserve Jess Nickel collected his first RBI of the season with a base hit up the middle in the seventh, knocking in pinch hitter Alex Finke, who singled to right in his lone at-bat of the contest.
Lakeland starting pitcher Trevor Hannes, who took the loss, was lifted in the fourth after giving up 10 runs (seven earned) in 3 1/3 innings pitched.
Travis Adams went six innings, surrendering just one earned run, to pick up the win for the Royals.
The Muskies return to action tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. EST against St. Lawrence. Lakeland pounded out 20 hits in a 17-4 victory over the Saints on Monday.
