Lakeland falls in Midwest 10 finals
Athletics - posted on 2/28/2009
The No. 15 Lakeland men's volleyball team fell just short of a championship on Saturday, suffering a 25-21, 23-25, 15-10 defeat to Marquette in the finals of the Midwest 10 Tournament at Marquette's Helfaer Recreation Center in Milwaukee.
Lakeland (20-4), which defeated the Golden Eagles earlier in the day prior to tournament play, fell victim to a streaking Marquette squad, which knocked off the nation's No. 1 team, UW-Oshkosh, in the quarterfinals.
"Marquette played extremely well, but I'm disappointed because we became mistake-prone in the final match after playing well all day," Lakeland coach Chad Schreiber said. "We gave them points with our hitting and service errors. Without those, it could have been a different story."
The third-seeded Muskies defeated sixth-seeded UW-Milwaukee 25-23, 25-23 in the quarterfinals, and knocked off eleventh-ranked Illinois State, the tournament's No. 2 seed, in the semifinals, 25-22, 25-16.
Earlier in the day, Lakeland beat Marquette (25-12, 25-18) and Ball State (25-14, 25-14) to wrap up its pre-tournament play date matches.
The Muskies will face Marquette for the fourth time this season this Tuesday, March 3, in Milwaukee. Match time for the Wisconsin Volleyball Conference showdown is set for 7:30 p.m.
