Quick start fuels Lakeland to win in NAC opener

SHEBOYGAN - The Lakeland women's volleyball team jumped out to a quick start on Tuesday night at Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium, defeating Alverno 25-8, 25-18, 25-18 in the Northern Athletics Conference opener for both teams.
The Muskies (7-2, 1-0 NAC) forced an early Alverno timeout after taking an 8-1 lead and never looked back in the first set.
Lakeland coach Chad Schreiber used a number of different line-up combinations throughout the contest, looking for depth at the middle hitter position behind starters Kim Linger and Allison Davis.
"I want to point out Jess Regester and Kaylyn Kasper for filling our middle hitter roles tonight," Schreiber said. "We are looking to create some depth at the position, it's nothing that Allison or Kim did. I thought they played very well."
All in all, the Muskies used 14 players on their roster for the match.
Five Lakeland players finished with four kills or more, including junior outside hitter Sam Shepeck (Gladstone, Mich.) and freshman outside hitter Taylor Daus (Green Bay, Wis.), who finished with eight and seven kills, respectively.
Senior setter Hannah Ellis (Edgerton, Wis.) and junior setter Kristine Raeder (Oostburg, Wis.) finished with 15 assists apiece.
Defensively, Daus and senior outside hitter Heather Mayer (Greenfield, Wis.) each tallied seven digs.
Alverno moves to 0-7 on the season, including a 0-1 mark in league play.
Lakeland returns to action this Thursday in a conference match at Wisconsin Lutheran. First serve is slated for 7 p.m. in Milwaukee, Wis.
