SHEBOYGAN - The Lakeland women's volleyball team used a pair of runs following a back-and-forth first set to defeat Maranatha Baptist 25-23, 25-12, 25-20 in a Northern Athletics Conference match on Tuesday night.
The Muskies (15-6 overall, 7-2 NAC) won six of the last seven points in the second set and broke a 14-14 tie with a five-point run in the third set.
Lakeland hung on in the first set as the Crusaders (7-14, 1-7) fought back each time it looked as if the Muskies would take control of the frame.
Middle hitters Kim Linger (Eldorado, Wis.) and Allison Davis (Sheboygan, Wis.) combined for 20 kills with stellar hitting percentages of .588 and .474, respectively, to lead the Muskie offensive attack.
"Allison and Kim are in the zone offensively, so the more balls we can get to them, the better we are," Lakeland coach Chad Schreiber said. "Our serving was a huge pitfall tonight, and we touched a lot of balls defensively but weren't able to control them."
Defensively, four players had at least nine digs for the Muskies, as junior setter Kristine Raeder (Oostburg, Wis.) led the way with 11 as well as 37 assists.
Schreiber still believes there is plenty of room to improve as Lakeland enters the final 2 1/2 weeks of regular season play.
"We've been pretty consistent in saying we still need to find a lineup combination that works," Schreiber said. "We have little room for error this weekend."
On Friday, the Muskies tangle with a pair of nationally-ranked opponents on Day 1 of the two-day Titan Tussle at UW-Oshkosh. Lakeland will take on No. 6 Carthage at 5:30 p.m. and 10th-ranked St. Thomas (Minn.) at 7:30 p.m.
