SHEBOYGAN - The Lakeland baseball team struggled to get the bats going, combining for just nine hits in a two-game sweep by Concordia, Wis., 12-2 and 8-0, in a Northern Athletics Conference showdown Wednesday at Lakeland.
In Game 1, the Muskies (5-11, 2-2 NAC) also struggled defensively, posting four errors in the contest.
The first miscue, a fielding error by shortstop Brad Young in the top of the fourth inning with two outs and nobody on, led to three unearned runs and an early 3-0 advantage for the Falcons (6-8, 2-0).
Down 6-2 in the bottom of the seventh, Lakeland had a chance to get back in the game with the bases loaded and one out. However, after winning pitcher Derrick Pankow struck out pinch hitter Doug Novak swinging, Rusty Meyer came on in relief for CUW and got Young to ground into a fielder's choice to end the frame.
The Falcons put the game away in the last two innings, tacking on six runs off Lakeland reliever Jake Van Camp.
Young put the Muskies on the board in the bottom of the sixth when he blasted a solo homer to center field.
Starting pitcher Mike Ruzek (2-2) tossed six strong innings, surrendering just one earned run on six hits, but took the loss.
Game 2 was a pitcher's dual through five innings. In the top of the sixth, the Falcons exploded for six runs on five hits off Lakeland starter Bill Miller to take a commanding 7-0 advantage.
The Muskies mustered just three hits in the game. Sophomore catcher David Novak was the only Muskie to reach base more than once, registering a hit and a walk.
Miller took his second loss of the season.
Lakeland resumes league play this Saturday at Maranatha Baptist. The doubleheader is set to begin at 12 p.m. in Watertown.
The team returns home on Sunday to face Marian in a doubleheader scheduled for 12 p.m.
