Muskies take conference opener on the road

Athletics - posted on 9/12/2009

In a back-and-forth match, the Lakeland men's soccer team prevailed in its Northern Athletics Conference opener 4-3 over Benedictine on Saturday afternoon in Lisle, Ill.

The Muskies (1-0-1, 1-0 NAC) exchanged goals with the Eagles throughout the match, but took control of the contest with a pair of second half goals, one just moments after halftime.

"We scored just about two minutes into the second half, they tied it and we finally put away the last goal," Lakeland coach David Madsen said. "We deserved to win, but there were several moments where we didn't take care of the things we should have."

Senior midfielder Ryan Malo (Beach Park, Ill.) led the Lakeland offensive attack with two goals. Sophomore Adam Benson (Anoka, Minn.) also scored, and sophomore Ben Koepsell (Cedar Grove, Wis.) found the back of the net for the second time in the season.

After falling behind 2-1, the Muskies converted just before halftime to square the match.

"In the first 10 minutes, we controlled things," Madsen said. "We were sucessful on a set play for our first goal, but we struggled with our rhythm the rest of the half. We got lazy on defense and settled for too much."

Benedictine falls to 3-2 overall and 0-1 in conference play.

The Muskies return to action tomorrow at St. Norbert. Match time is set for 2:30 p.m. in De Pere, Wis.
