Muskies suffer first defeat at St. Norbert

The Lakeland men's soccer team was defeated for the first time in the 2009 season when it lost 2-0 at St. Norbert in a non-conference match in De Pere, Wis.

The Muskies (1-1-1, 1-0 Northern Athletics Conference), who were outshot 22-6 in the contest, surrendered a pair of goals in a six-minute span late in the first half.

Lakeland coach David Madsen was pleased with the way his team was playing up to that point.

"We were playing alright at the start," Madsen said. "We had moments where we had lapses around the 30th minute where we lost our marks on defense. We also had good chances to score but hit the crossbar with a shot."

According to Madsen, Lakeland had more than one opportunity in the second half to pull within one, but was unable to convert.

Freshman midfielder Jacob Kleinschmidt (Neenah, Wis.) led the Muskies with three shots attempted. Sophomore goalkeeper Ross Soukup (Plymouth, Wis.) recorded five saves for Lakeland.

Goalkeepers Joe Schwartz and Nolan Picchietti combined for the shut-out for the Green Knights (5-0).

"It was a good challenge for us," Madsen said. "We are recognizing the strides we need to be taking. I'm disappointed in the loss, but overall we battled and created several chances to score."

The Muskies will play their third game in four days this Tuesday as they take on Ripon. Game time is slated for 4:30 p.m. in Ripon, Wis.
