Lakeland drops heartbreaker at CUW
Athletics - posted on 9/29/2009
The Lakeland men's soccer team suffered a gut-wrenching 1-0 loss at Concordia, Wis., in a Northern Athletics Conference match at Mequon, Wis.
The Muskies (3-5-1 overall, 2-2 NAC) have now lost four straight contests after winning three of four.
The Falcons (7-2-2, 3-0), who out-shot the Muskies 22-7, scored the game's only goal in the 77th minute when Carl Haynes put one past Lakeland goalkeeper Alex Piekarski.
"On the whole, we played pretty well," Lakeland coach David Madsen said. "We were pretty organized, but somewhat impatient going forward. We played the way we needed to play."
Senior forward Ted Cormier (Green Bay, Wis.) led the Muskie attack with three shots on goal. Piekarski (Menasha, Wis.) saved seven shots for Lakeland.
"We played pretty well, and I'm happy to see us playing the way we are capable of playing," Madsen said. "Unfortunately, we came out on the wrong end of the scoreboard today."
The Muskies continue their three-match road trip this Sunday at Rockford. The match is scheduled for 3:30 p.m., or following conclusion of the Lakeland-Rockford women's soccer contest.
