Kristina Borts (Milwaukee) put a ball over the head of the Ripon keeper in the 103rd minute as the Lakeland College women's soccer team picked up its first victory of the season, downing Ripon 2-1 Wednesday afternoon in Ripon, Wis.
Borts also tallied the first goal for Lakeland (1-9, 0-4), scoring off of a free kick that was misplayed by the Ripon keeper 27 minutes into the first half.
Ripon answered two minutes later with a goal by Rachel Martsahl to even the contest at 1-1.
"We knew we had to start off quick, and it was disappointing after Ripon tied it up, but we played hard to finish the half," Lakeland head coach Dave Madsen said.
The Muskies missed opportunities to score in the second half, failing to finish a pair of corner kicks and unable to hit on breakaways, including a shot that hit the post.
A big break for Lakeland came in the 75rd minute when Ali Borowski was sent off with a red card, forcing Ripon to play with 10 players for the remainder of the match.
"It took us a little while to take advantage, but we eventually started finding gaps and advancing the ball," Madsen said. Kristi's goal was a great way to end the game and the girls have been working so hard, so it was nice to get the win."
Lakeland keeper Whitney England (Ashwaubenon) stopped 14 of 15 shots on goal as Ripon fired off 25 total shots.
Borts and Lindsay Rogers (Sheboygan) each tallied three shots on goal for Lakeland
The Muskies return to conference play on Sunday, Oct. 4, as they travel to Rockford. Match time is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
