The Lakeland men's soccer team shut out Marian 1-0 in a Northern Athletics Conference contest Wednesday night in Fond du Lac, Wis.
Sophomore Derek Pitterle (Waukesha, Wis.) scored his first goal of the season in the 70th minute, which proved to be the game-winner for the Muskies (8-7-1 overall, 6-3 NAC).
Pitterle, a midfielder, found the back of the net on a through ball misplayed by the Sabres' goalkeeper.
"In the second half, we squeezed them a little bit with our attack," Lakeland coach David Madsen said. "We won a lot of the 50-50 balls and asserted the pace of play. We were able to contain (Marian) defensively as well."
Freshman goalkeeper Alex Piekarski (Menasha, Wis.) registered his second consecutive shutout and his third of the year with three saves.
The Muskies out-shot Marian (4-11-1, 1-7-1) 11-6 in the match, including 8-2 in the second half.
"We took a while to adapt and work our way into the start of the game," Madsen said. "We didn't get any dangerous looks, but we didn't give up many chances."
The victory was the second straight for Lakeland, which hosts Aurora this Saturday at 1 p.m.
Lakeland seniors Ted Cormier (Green Bay, Wis.) and Ryan Malo (Beach Park, Ill.) will be honored prior to the match.
