Lakeland shut out on Senior Day

Athletics - posted on 10/25/2009

SHEBOYGAN - The Lakeland men's soccer team was unable to create many offensive chances in a 2-0 loss to Aurora on Sunday afternoon at the Lakeland soccer field.

Lakeland (8-8-1 overall, 6-4 NAC) and Aurora are now tied for fifth in the Northern Athletics Conference, with the Spartans controlling their own destiny for the fifth seed in the six-team conference tournament.

The Muskies mustered only one shot in the contest compared to 10 shots for Aurora (10-5-1, 6-4).

The Spartans tallied goals in the 37th and 62nd minutes, controlling possession for much of the contest on Lakeland's half of the field.

Freshman goalkeeper Alex Piekarski (Menasha, Wis.) stopped three shots for the Muskies.

Prior to the match, Lakeland seniors Ted Cormier (Green Bay, Wis.) and Rodolfo "Tito" Sosa (Kimberly, Wis.) were recognized for their contributions to the men's soccer program.

In his first season with the team, Sosa, who has been used as both a forward and defender, has started eight matches and recorded three goals for the Muskies.

Cormier, a forward, is currently second in school history in both career goals (26) and career assists (13).

Lakeland concludes regular season play this Tuesday at home against MSOE at 3 p.m. The Muskies would need a win coupled with an Aurora loss tomorrow against Benedictine to claim the No. 5 seed in the NAC Tournament, which begins on Nov. 1.
