Lakeland's season ends with loss at Edgewood

Athletics - posted on 11/1/2009

The Lakeland men's soccer team saw its 2009 season come to an end on Sunday afternoon with a 3-1 loss at Edgewood in the first round of the Northern Athletics Conference Tournament.

The Muskies (8-10-1) struggled to find offensive chances in the first half, scoring its lone goal in the 77th minute after falling behind 3-0.

"We played an OK match, but let Edgewood dictate things in the first half," Lakeland coach David Madsen said. "We made adjustments to increase our attack at the half, and we created a lot of chances in the second half."

Sophomore Ben Koepsell (Cedar Grove, Wis.) recorded his team-leading eighth goal of the season. The midfielder put the ball inside the near post after cutting inside of an Edgewood defender.

Prior to out-shooting the Eagles (12-4-3) by a 10-4 margin in the second half, the Muskies were out-shot 12-4 in the first.

"The way we played at the end left a lot to be desired for how we played at the beginning," Madsen said, "but we're on our way to make a push in the standings next year."

Freshman Alex Piekarski (Menasha, Wis.) finished with two saves for Lakeland.

For the season, the Muskies finished with a 6-5 mark in conference play along with an above-.500 (5-3) record in road matches.
