Muskies take pair against Marian

FOND DU LAC- Sam Shepeck (Gladstone, Mich.) was 6-8 from the plate Friday night and drove in five runs, including the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning in game two, as the Lakeland College softball team defeated Marian in its Northern Athletics Conference openers 5-3 and 8-7.
"Anytime you can go two weeks without stepping on the field in a game and win two games, that's a great thing," Lakeland head coach Chad Buchmann said.
The Muskies, playing their first games in two weeks due to poor weather conditions, jumped on the board early in the first game. Chelsea Coenen (Wrightstown) reached on a double and was driven in on a single by Shepeck in the bottom of the first as Lakeland took an early 1-0 lead.
Marian tied the game at 1-1 for Marian in the top of the fourth on an RBI single from Emily Boehnlein.
The Muskies did the majority of their damage in the 6th. KC Blahnik (Gladstone, Mich.) tripled in Nicole Geurtz (Freedom) with two outs to give Lakeland a 2-1 lead. An error at first base in the next at bat allowed Coenen to reach base and Blahnik to score from third, and Shepeck added two insurance runs with a two-run shot as the Muskies took game one by a score of 5-3.
Lakeland reached the scoreboard first again in game two, scoring a single run in the first inning and adding two more in the second despite leaving the bases loaded in taking a 3-0 lead.
Marian stormed back in the top of the third, collecting three runs on six hits, and also left the bases full as the Sabres tied the game at 3-3.
Lakeland score twice more in their half of the third despite not recording a hit. An error on a sacrifice bunt by Shepeck with Christina Moore on first base put two runners on with no outs. After advancing on another sacrifice bunt, both runners scored on a suicide squeeze by Guertz and an error on the throw as Lakeland reclaimed the lead at 5-3.
Marian tallied another run in the fourth, cutting the lead to one.
Blahnik led off the Lakeland fourth with a solo shot, putting the Muskies back up by two runs. Coenen followed with a walk, but was thrown out at home as she tried to score on a Shepeck double. Shepeck, who advanced to third on the throw, scored on a sacrifice by Moore as Lakeland retook a three run lead.
The Marian offense answered with three runs of its own, scoring three unearned runs, all with two outs as the Sabres once again tied the contest at 7-7.
Both teams were shut down in the sixth and seventh. Lakeland had a chance to win in the seventh with runners on the corners and two outs, but was unable to score.
Sara Roberts (Escanaba, Mich.) recorded victories in both games. She threw all seven innings in the first contest, giving up seven his and three earned runs. She struggled in game two, allowing ten hits and three runs in five and two-thirds. However, Roberts, who re-entered to pitch in the sixth inning, threw three innings of one-hit ball and no runs at the end of the game.
"We hit the ball well, had some terrific bunts and made some special plays tonight," said Buchmann. "We showed some fight in having to battle back a couple of times."
Lakeland is scheduled for a doubleheader with Dominican Saturday, April 4. Check back
here tomorrow morning for an updated location and game time
