Muskies ride the long ball in split at Benedictine

The Lakeland College softball team rebounded from a tough 1-0 loss to win the second game 8-5 in a Northern Athletics Conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon in Lisle, Ill.

The victory was Lakeland's first over Benedictine in four years.

The Muskies struggled to find base runners in the opener with two hits and no walks. Freshman Christina Moore (New London) and junior Sara Roberts (Escanaba, Mich.) recorded Lakeland's lone hits as the Muskies placed no one on base after the fourth inning.

The Eagles scored their lone run in the bottom of the third as an error at short allowed Kristin Bonk to score from third.

Roberts ended with a sold line in the circle, giving up one unearned on four hits with no walks in six innings pitched.

"We went on a cold streak this weekend at the plate," Lakeland coach Chad Buchmann said. "We had a hard time getting into any rhythm, but we finally got into a groove in the second game."

Game two saw the Muskies pound out eight runs and 10 hits to take a three-run victory.

KC Blahnik (Gladstone, Mich.) and Roberts each homered and drove in a pair of runs as the Muskies put up four runs in each of the first and fourth innings. Roberts' dinger came after two runs had scored in the first with two outs, and Blahnik's shot to center field capped a four-run fourth inning.

Alyssa Nelson (Germantown) picked up her second win in relief of Roberts. Nelson allowed five runners and two unearned runs in four and a third innings pitched.

"We learned this weekend that we can't make defensive mistakes if we want to beat the top teams," said Buchmann. "We had chances in all four games to win and errors in the field proved costly."

Lakeland closes out the regular season tomorrow with a 5 p.m. doubleheader at Maranatha.
