Lakeland swept in final home doubleheader

SHEBOYGAN - The Lakeland baseball team suffered a pair of setbacks, 14-8 and 15-0, in a Northern Athletics Conference doubleheader against Rockford on Saturday afternoon at Lakeland.

The contests marked the final home games for Lakeland's five seniors - Travis Chell, Alex Grant, Zach Hilbert, Mike Phillips and Jake Van Camp. With the exception of Grant, who has been out all season due to injury, each senior saw playing time in at least one game.

The Muskies (12-23, 7-11 NAC) took an 8-6 lead in the sixth inning of Game 1 after a squeeze bunt by junior Jacob Heinemeyer and a sacrifice fly by sophomore Brad Young.

However, Rockford answered in the top half of the seventh, posting five runs off Lakeland starting pitcher Matt Katzman (1-2) to take command of the game.

"We battled in Game 1," Lakeland coach Chris Thousand said. "I'm disappointed, though, because we're close at times, but we're far away at other times."

After roughing up Rockford starter Will Kuchelmeister in the first six innings, the Muskie bats cooled off in the last three, with Rockford's Travis Mohr (5-2) tossing 3 2/3 innings of shutout baseball.

Freshman designated hitter Alex Finke led the Muskies with two hits in the game, while sophomore second baseman Ryan Polizzi knocked in two runs with a two-out double in the fourth.

Seven of Lakeland's nine hitters had a hit in the game, and all nine reached base.

In the second game, the Regents (23-11, 15-5) blew the game open in the fifth inning, scoring 10 runs off Van Camp (1-4), who started the game, and freshman Matt Buhrow, who came on in relief.

Lakeland mustered only two hits in the game off Rockford starter Adam Ketzner, who threw all seven innings of the 10-run rule shortened contest.

The team also committed three errors defensively, adding fuel to Rockford's 19-hit performance.

"Rockford's pitcher threw really well in the second game," Thousand said. "For us, we need to learn how to put it together for two games in a row. The key is if we can find consistency."

Lakeland wraps up its 2009 season next week with a pair of league doubleheaders on the road. On Monday, the team is tentatively slated to play Dominican. Game time in River Forest, Ill., is to be determined.

The Muskies will then play MSOE at Wisconsin Lutheran's Neumann Family Field on Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Milwaukee.
